The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran, also known as the Magical Nation of Dalaran,W3Man 8, 89 is a magocratic (Magocracy is the term used to describe the government of the human nation of Dalaran, which is ruled by a group of archmagi called the Kirin Tor.) city-state which exists within Alterac Mountains ( UndeadOgre
The Alterac Mountains is the location of the former nation of Alterac and the city-state of Dalaran, and its chief settlements included the City of Alterac, Dalaran and Strahnbrad.) (formerly Alterac) of northern Eastern Kingdoms (The Eastern Kingdoms is a group of smaller continents which were formed from Azeroth's original single continent following the Great Sundering.). Its leaders rule the single city.ToD 73 Recently the city, including the Violet Citadel (Central fortress of Dalaran which housed the Eye of Dalaran, the Chamber of Air, and great spell library of the Kirin Tor, the ruling mage class of Dalaran.), has somehow been moved to the icy land of Northrend ( Furbolgs Ice trollNerubianTaunkaTuskarr Vrykul Scourge Undead
Northrend is the icy, northernmost continent of the world of Azeroth, and the source of the evil Scourge.). Ruled by the Kirin Tor (The Kirin Tor is a lawful and neutral collection of the most powerful human, gnome and high elf mages in the world.), Dalaran is one of the original seven kingdoms (The Seven Kingdoms were the human city-state nations founded after the fracturing of the great empire of Arathor, approximately 1,200 years before the First War.) originating from the days of the Nation of Arathor (Arathor was the first great human nation, founded by a unification of the various tribes of the Eastern Kingdoms under the Arathi.). Since its foundation until Arthas (Arthas Menethil, Crown Prince of Lordaeron and Knight of the Silver Hand, was the son of King Terenas Menethil II and heir to the throne.) laid siege to the city, and brought about its destruction, the Violet Citadel (Central fortress of Dalaran which housed the Eye of Dalaran, the Chamber of Air, and great spell library of the Kirin Tor, the ruling mage class of Dalaran.) had served as the focal point for magi (Mages, or magi, are casters that specialize in burst damage and area of effect spells.) and the study of the arcane (The Arcane (aka arcane magic) is a general term for various domains of magic in Warcraft lore used in contrast with divine magic.) throughout human (Humans in Warcraft are a resilient species native to the Eastern Kingdoms, where they founded seven kingdoms that banded together in the Second War.) history. The kingdom's national color is violet, and its flag is a yellow or possibly golden eye set against a light purple background.
HistoryDalaran was one of the original city-states founded during the Arathorian empire. Since its inception, the city has served as a hub of magical knowledge and experimentation in Lordaeron and the world. A multi-racial wizards' council called the Kirin Tor ruled the city for centuries, overseeing Dalaran from the Violet Citadel — a great, slender spire in the city's heart that housed the most extensive libraries and greatest laboratories in the world. The traitor Prince Arthas laid siege to Dalaran in the Third War. He murdered its citizens, including the great archmage Antonidas, and broke into the city's heart. His ally, the lich Kel'Thuzad, then summoned Archimonde, the Burning Legion's leader. Archimonde wielded foul magic to topple the city's towers and sunder its walls. Shortly after Dalaran's fall, the undead abandoned the city to the wind and mist. Months later, a resistance force led by the surviving Dalaran wizards arrived and laid claim to the ruins. Pooling their magical power, the wizards covered Dalaran in an opaque magical sphere. It is unknown what occurs beneath the dome and the wizards warn others not to get too close.LoC 91
Founding and early historyThe second city of the Nation of Arathor (Arathor was the first great human nation, founded by a unification of the various tribes of the Eastern Kingdoms under the Arathi.), Dalaran was founded in the lands northwest of Strom (Strom was the capital of the ancient human nation of Arathor.). Many fledgling wizards and magi who left the restraining confines of Strom behind traveled to Dalaran, where they hoped to use their new powers with greater freedom. These new settlers used their knowledge to form the enchanted spires of the Violet Citadel on Cross Island (Cross Island was a cross shaped peninsula on the southern shore of Lordamere Lake.) just ouside the city of DalaranLG 127, and reveled in the pursuit of their studies. The citizens of Dalaran built up a bustling economy under the protection of their magic-using defenders.
Yet, as their numbers and influence grew, more and more magi practiced their arts, the fabric of reality around Dalaran began to weaken and tear, allowing demons (The daemon was the original infernal creature of the Warcraft series, the chaotic evil denizens of the Lower Planes.) of the Burning Legion (The Burning Legion (aka demon hordeDotD 161) is a massive army of demons, infernals, and corrupted races who seek to destroy any trace of order in the Universe.) into the world. These invaders caused havoc in the streets and countryside of Dalaran, despite the efforts of the Magocrats (Magocracy is the term used to describe the government of the human nation of Dalaran, which is ruled by a group of archmagi called the Kirin Tor.), the ruling archmagi (The Archmagi are a group of people hailing from the magical kingdom of Dalaran to represent the pinnacle of magical power.), to deal with the problem. Fearing revolt and military action from Strom, the rulers of Dalaran turned to the high elves (The high elves, or quel'dorei ("Children of Noble Birth" in Darnassian and "high elves" in Thalassian), are a race descended from the Highborne night elves who left Kalimdor and settled in the Eastern Kingdoms, founding Quel'Thalas.). The elves were able to determine that the daemons which had been summoned could be dealt with, but a more permanent solution was needed. The Magocrats entered into a deal with the Convocation of Silvermoon (The Convocation of Silvermoon, also called the Council of Silvermoon or the Silver Circle, was the ruling body of the high elven realm of Quel'Thalas.), and the Order of Tirisfal (The Council of Tirisfal, also called the Order of Tirisfal, was the secret council of human, gnome and high elven mages charged with the selection and disposition of the Guardian of Tirisfal.) was founded.
