  • Where the "Draenor" Realm name comes from: (Courtesy of WoWWiki.)

Outland (sometimes incorrectly referred to as "Outlands" or "the Outland[s]") is the name given to the shattered floating remnants of the red world (A world is the largest geographical category, also known in WoW as planets.) Draenor, the homeworld of the orcs (The green skinned orcs are one of the most prolific races of Azeroth.) and refuge of the draenei (The draenei (pronounced as DRAN-eye) are a faction of uncorrupted eredar who fled their home world of Argus.), the current domain of Illidan Stormrage (High Warlord Naj'entusSupremusShade of AkamaTeron GorefiendGurtogg BloodboilReliquary of SoulsMother ShahrazIllidari CouncilIllidan Stormrage

Illidan Stormrage, known as The Betrayer, is currently the self-proclaimed Lord of Outland, ruling from the Black Temple.) and his followers. Draenor was a massive planet and a large amount of the action in The Burning Crusade takes place on the largest of the planet's fragments.

    History

Several thousand years ago, the draenei, a faction of the eredar (The eredar were a race of supremely talented magic-wielders who arose on the planet Argus countless millenia ago.) who opposed the Burning Legion (The Burning Legion (aka demon hordeDotD 161) is a massive army of demons, infernals, and corrupted races who seek to destroy any trace of order in the Universe.) and split from their brethren (The man'ari eredar are the demon-corrupted eredar who now lead the Burning Legion.), found a tranquil planet in the void (The Twisting Nether dimension is separate, but intertwined with the primary material dimension (where your player character lives most of the time).). Having at last outrun the bloodthirsty forces of the Burning Legion, the draenei settled the planet and named it "Exile's Refuge" in Eredun (Eredun (aka Demonic) is the language of the demons of the Burning Legion.): "Draenor". The Orcs did not have a name for the place, other than "world"RotH 57, but eventually adopted the Eredun term.

Draenor was a peaceful world dominated by vast plains and luscious swamps. Originally, there were many intelligent races, the most powerful of which were the orcs. The orcs lived in a quiet, shamanistic society, until power-hungry leaders, led and manipulated by Gul'dan (Gul'dan the Warlock, Master of the Inner Circle of the Shadow Council and Destroyer of Dreams, was the de facto leader of the Horde in its early years, and believed to be the most powerful mortal warlock ever to exist.), made a blood pact with Mannoroth (Mannoroth the Destructor was a Pit Lord whose ruthlessness and vile cunning made him into one of the favoured lieutenants of his masters, Archimonde and Kil'jaeden, the champions of the Burning Legion.), a general of the Burning Legion (The Burning Legion (aka demon hordeDotD 161) is a massive army of demons, infernals, and corrupted races who seek to destroy any trace of order in the Universe.), turning the orcs into bloodthirsty barbarian conquerors. The warlock magics wielded by the orcs turned Draenor into a dusty wasteland. The orcs, under orders from Kil'jaeden (Kalecgos BrutallusFelmystEredar TwinsM'uruKil'jaeden

Kil'jaeden the Deceiver is a powerful eredar demon lord and is the acting leader of the Burning Legion.), decimated the draenei (The draenei (pronounced as DRAN-eye) are a faction of uncorrupted eredar who fled their home world of Argus.), enslaved the ogres (Ogres are large, brutish humanoids originally from Draenor.), and gained dark dominion over Draenor. Before the Horde could destroy themselves in their bloodlust, Medivh (Magus Medivh,[2][3][4] who may also be known as Magna Medivh, was the last Guardian of Tirisfal, an ancient line of protectors bestowed with great powers to do battle with the agents of the Burning Legion.) and Gul'dan (Gul'dan the Warlock, Master of the Inner Circle of the Shadow Council and Destroyer of Dreams, was the de facto leader of the Horde in its early years, and believed to be the most powerful mortal warlock ever to exist.) opened the Dark Portal (The Dark Portal (aka the Great Portal) is the gateway between Azeroth and Draenor.), allowing the Horde (Old Horde (The history of the Horde spans several decades of an organizationHPG 4 that has taken many forms.)) access to the world of Azeroth (The following is a list of links to pages that might share the same title.) to start a new war and pave the way for the Burning Legion's second invasion of Kalimdor.

What few draenei survived attempted to load their dimensional ships and launched themselves again into the void in search of a new haven.

Eventually the Horde was beaten back, and Draenor became the focus of an attack, via the Dark Portal (The Dark Portal (aka the Great Portal) is the gateway between Azeroth and Draenor.), of an Alliance (The Alliance (a.) expedition aiming to end the orcish threat to Azeroth once and for all. In the midst of the ensuing battle the Elder Shaman Ner'zhul (The Elder Shaman Ner'zhul was the Warchief of Draenor, the clans that remained uncaptured after the Dark Portal was destroyed in Azeroth.) attempted to allow the remaining orcs on Draenor to escape to other worlds by opening other dimensional portals; however the presence of so many portals tore the planet apart, leaving only torn fragments of the former world floating in the Nether (The Twisting Nether dimension is separate, but intertwined with the primary material dimension (where your player character lives most of the time).), and the barely-hospitable remnants were renamed Outland. In the explosion most of the life on Draenor was wiped out although a number of orcs, ogres (Ogres are large, brutish humanoids originally from Draenor.) and some of the few remaining draenei (The draenei (pronounced as DRAN-eye) are a faction of uncorrupted eredar who fled their home world of Argus.) survived. After the explosion, a Pit Lord (A warrior hero of the Annihilan, exceptional at weakening enemies and melee combat.) named Magtheridon (Magtheridon, the former Lord of Outland, is a Pit Lord who conquered the ruins of the orcish homeworld following its destruction.) rallied the surviving orcs and took control of Outland. Using the remaining Dimensional Gates, he drew demons from the Twisting Nether (The Twisting Nether dimension is separate, but intertwined with the primary material dimension (where your player character lives most of the time).) to aid him.

The night elf (The night elves, or kaldorei, meaning "Children of the Stars" in their native tongue of Darnassian, have a long and fascinating history.) demon (Hellish, twisted creatures found on the worlds conquered by the Burning Legion.) Illidan Stormrage (High Warlord Naj'entusSupremusShade of AkamaTeron GorefiendGurtogg BloodboilReliquary of SoulsMother ShahrazIllidari CouncilIllidan Stormrage
