The Kingdom of Gilneas is a human nation (The Seven Kingdoms were the human city-state nations founded after the fracturing of the great empire of Arathor, approximately 1,200 years before the First War.) located in the peninsula directly south of Silverpine Forest ( Human Worgen Gnoll Murloc
Silverpine Forest is a vast, ancient wood that runs along Lordaeron's rugged western coast.) on the continent of Lordaeron (The following is a list of links to pages that might share the same title.). The kingdom was founded following the breaking of Arathor (Arathor was the first great human nation, founded by a unification of the various tribes of the Eastern Kingdoms under the Arathi.) and is ruled by the Greymane (
Lord Genn Greymane is the king of the nation of GilneasAPG 161ToD 72, 73.) dynasty. Besides the peninsula, the kingdom also included the island of Zul'Dare (Zul'Dare is an island on the southern edge of the Channel Islands of Baradin Bay.).
Gilneas is a large peninsula that juts into the sea south of western Lordaeron. Silverpine Forest lies to the northeast and Kul Tiras awaits across the sea to the south. Lord Genn Greymane never supported the Lordaeron Alliance in the Second War. Thus, after the war, he constructed the Greymane Wall: a massive barrier spanning the entire northern border. The enormous wall barricades Gilneas fromLordaeron. Gilneas does not allow anyone in or out, and none knows what has been transpiring there since the end of the end of the Second War.LoC 96
HistoryBy the start of the Second War (The Second War was a conflict between the Alliance of Lordaeron and the Old Horde, engulfing all the lands of the Eastern Kingdoms, and ending with the victory for the Alliance.) Gilneas was one of the most powerful human nations, and because of this the kingdom's ruler, Genn Greymane (
Lord Genn Greymane is the king of the nation of GilneasAPG 161ToD 72, 73.), was not a strong supporter of the Alliance (The Alliance (a.), believing that his own armies would be more than enough to deal with any threat. Despite this, Gilneas was not neutral towards the Horde (The Horde is one of the two major political factions of the mortal races in Azeroth, its counterpart being the Alliance.). Gilneas did join the Alliance late in the Second War, but very shortly after the Horde was defeated, Greymane pulled his nation's support from the Alliance, refusing to spend his nation's resources on keeping the orcs alive in internment camps or in rebuilding other nations devastated by the war. Greymane's isolationism may have been influenced by Daval Prestor (Deathwing the Destroyer,[1] originally Neltharion the Earth-Warder, is one of the five Dragon Aspects, and leader of the black dragonflight.), secretly black dragon Deathwing (Deathwing the Destroyer,[1] originally Neltharion the Earth-Warder, is one of the five Dragon Aspects, and leader of the black dragonflight.) in human (Humans in Warcraft are a resilient species native to the Eastern Kingdoms, where they founded seven kingdoms that banded together in the Second War.) disguise, who Greymane had supported to the throne of Alterac (Past Ruler: Lord Perenolde
Alterac was one of the seven human nations to join the Alliance of Lordaeron during the Second War.).
Sometime after the Second War, Greymane, attempting to forever remove his nation from what he considered "other people's troubles", barricaded Gilneas behind the Greymane Wall (The Greymane Wall was erected after the Second War by Genn Greymane, as the nation of Gilneas isolated itself from the Alliance because of a dispute surrounding the internment camps for the orcs.). No one, not even other humans are allowed to enter Gilneas. Even during the Scourge's (The Scourge is one of the two undead factions in Azeroth (the other being the Forsaken).) invasion of Lordaeron, while human refugees came begging to be allowed in, the Greymane Wall remained closed. Because of this, Gilneas was not affected by the Scourge. Although the land connection to Gilneas is closed, ships from Gilneas have been spotted throughout the world, such as the pirate ship Heedless of captain Baron Longshore (Baron Longshore <Southsea Freebooters> is a level 16 named human pirate located on the Merchant Coast in The Barrens.). Apparently thanks to the latter, Jaina Proudmoore (Archmage Jaina Proudmoore is the leader of the island port of Theramore, daughter of Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, sister of Tandred Proudmoore, and half-sister to Finnall Goldensword.) managed to convince a number of people from Gilneas to join her during exodus to Kalimdor during the Third War (The Third War refers mainly to the events leading up to and including the second invasion of the Burning Legion, the destruction of the major Alliance lands by the Scourge, and the migration to Kalimdor, culminating in the Battle of Mount Hyjal, where the Burning Legion were defeated.). These people formed the Gilneas Brigade (The Gilneas Brigade, commanded by a random mountain king, was a detachment of troops within the survivors of Lordaeron that were led by Jaina Proudmoore to Kalimdor (Cry of the Warsong).).
Genn Greymane, a brawny warrior who, if he lives, must be in his seventies, has ruled Gilneas for decades. Greymane did not join the Lordaeron Alliance in the Second War and argued against its existence from beginning to end. His people constructed the Greymane Wall after the Second War, and no one has heard anything from Gilneas since. During the Third War, refugees from the north camped at Greymane Wall, pleading to be let inside. The gates remained closed, and undead patrols slaughtered the refugees. Perhaps something dire has befallen Gilneas.LoC 97
Gilneas' current state is partly under speculation. It is not known if Genn Greymane is still alive and ruling Gilneas. The dwarven explorer, Brann Bronzebeard (Brann Bronzebeard is the youngest of the three Bronzebeard brothers, with King Magni Bronzebeard and Muradin Bronzebeard being his elders.), has heard whispers from Kul Tiras that the Naga (The naga are former Highborne night elves who mutated into vengeful humanoid sea serpents.) may have taken GilneasLoC 97, though there is no proof to support this.
